- Microsoft Teams Optimization with VMware Horizon | VMware

Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support. In the past, Microsoft Teams was a separate installation from Microsoft Apps. But starting with Version , Teams is included as part of new installations of Microsoft Apps. If Teams is already installed on the device, no changes are made to that installation of Teams.

Teams is also being added to existing installations of Microsoft Apps on devices running Windows. For more information about when that occurs, see What about existing installations of Microsoft Apps? To complete the installation of Teams on new or existing installations of Microsoft Apps, either restart the device or have the user log off and log back on. If Skype for Business is already installed on the device, Skype for Business won't be removed and will continue to function as before.

Skype for Business will continue to be installed with new installations of Microsoft Apps, unless you configure your installation to exclude it.

You don't have to wait if you're ready now to deploy Teams to the users in your organization. We also have the steps you can take to exclude Teams from new or existing installations of Microsoft Apps if your organization isn't ready to deploy Teams.

Instead, you need to install Teams by using the separate MSI-based installer. The date when Teams starts being installed with new installations of Microsoft Apps depends on which update channel you're using. The following table shows the schedule.

Or, as an alternative, you can let Teams be installed, but use Group Policy to prevent Teams from automatically starting when the user signs in to the device. If you want to use the Office Deployment Tool , you can use the ExcludeApp element in your configuration. Instead of using a text editor to create your configuration.

The OCT provides a web-based interface for making your selections and creating your configuration. For more information, see Overview of the Office Customization Tool.

If you're letting your users install Microsoft Apps for themselves from the Office portal, you can't exclude Teams from being included as part of the installation, unless you use Group Policy. If you previously installed Teams separately from installing Microsoft Apps, you might see multiple instances of Teams Machine-Wide Installer. You can also use PowerShell to remove Teams as shown in this script sample.

Teams is also being added to existing installations of Microsoft Apps on devices running Windows as part of the normal update process. There is no change to existing installations of Mac. Whether Teams gets added to an existing installation of Microsoft Apps is determined by what version is installed, what version you're updating to, and some other factors. Version that was released in Current Channel in July is the first version that started including Teams as part of the update process.

But not all devices updating to Version or later have received Teams as part of the update process because the rollout has been a gradual process over several months.

So if you've updated a device to the latest version of Microsoft Apps, but Teams hasn't been installed, that is probably expected and not necessarily an error. It's likely a future update will install Teams. If you're updating your existing installation of Microsoft Apps to Version Build To complete the installation of Teams after the update, either restart the device or have the user log off and log back on.

The date when Teams can start being added to existing installations of Microsoft Apps depends on which update channel you're using. If you don't want Teams to be added to existing installations of Microsoft Apps when you update to a newer version, you can use Group Policy or the Office Deployment Tool.

Or, as an alternative, you can let Teams be added, but use Group Policy to prevent Teams from automatically starting when the user signs in to the device. The following is a configuration. Also, in some situations, doing an Online Repair results in Teams being installed.

For example, if Microsoft Apps is configured to get updates from the Office Content Delivery Network CDN and the update channel or version you're using includes Teams as part of the installation. If your organization isn't ready to deploy Teams and you use Group Policy, you can enable the Don't install Microsoft Teams with new installations or updates of Office policy setting.

If you enable this policy setting, Teams won't be installed in the following scenarios for Version or later:. If you want Teams to be installed, but don't want Teams to start automatically for the user after it's installed, you can use Group Policy and enable the Prevent Microsoft Teams from starting automatically after installation policy setting.

By enabling this policy setting before Teams is installed , Teams won't start automatically when the user logs in to the device. Once a user signs in to Teams for the first time, Teams is configured to start automatically the next time the user logs into the device. The user can configure Teams to not start automatically by configuring user settings within Teams or by clearing the Open Teams on startup check box on the sign in screen for Teams.

If you've already installed Teams but you want to use this policy setting to prevent Teams from starting automatically, enable this policy setting and then run this script on a per-user basis to reset the autostart setting for Teams. But even if you enable this policy setting so that Teams doesn't start automatically, an icon for Microsoft Teams will appear on the user's desktop.

If devices in your organization are shared by multiple users, be aware that Teams is installed separately for each user that signs into that device. Installations of Teams average about mb, so hard disk space, as well network bandwidth for updates, might become an issue for these shared devices installed with Teams.

In cases where shared devices are used by a significant number of users, you might want to consider not installing Teams on those shared devices. After Teams is installed, it's automatically updated approximately every two weeks with new features and quality updates. This update process for Teams is different than the update process for the other Office apps, such as Word and Excel.

For more information, see Teams update process. If you're using Version If you don't want Teams included as part of the installation, there is an Office suite install package available that doesn't include Teams. You can also use the install packages for individual applications, such as Word or Excel. For links to the most current install packages, see Update history for Office for Mac. Some Office plans include Microsoft Apps, but don't include the Teams service.

Even if a plan doesn't include the Teams service, Teams will still be installed with Microsoft Apps, as described earlier in this article. To prevent Teams from being installed, follow the steps outlined earlier in this article. For Office plans that don't include the Teams service, a free trial version of Teams that's valid for 1 year is available. Your users can start using it when they sign in to Teams. For more information about this free trial version and providing your users access to it, see Manage the Microsoft Teams Commercial Cloud Trial offer.

Teams for Virtualized Desktop Infrastructure - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Docs

After Teams has restarted, users can open chat in a separate window by simply right-clicking on any chat and selecting Pop out chat option. Teams users on VDI can give and take control during calls and meetings while sharing their desktop. Give control Presenters can give control to another meeting participant to change a file, help present, or demonstrate.

Presenters can take back control of the shared content at any time. Teams then sends a notification to that person to let them know the presenter is sharing control. While control is shared, they can make selections, edits, and other modifications to the shared screen.

Take control To take control while another person is sharing, simply:. Select Request control, from the sharing toolbar prompting the presenter to approve or deny the request. Once a user has control, they can make selections, edits, and other modifications to the shared screen. To return screen ownership to the presenter, select select Release control. This feature is available in desktop sharing scenarios but is not supported in individual window sharing.

It will soon be available to Azure Virtual Desktop. Teams users on VDI can now use real-time captions to improve meeting accessibility for participants with hearing impairments, varying levels of language proficiency, or those who may be attending from noisy environments. Users can also adjust the language captured for improved the accuracy of the captioning. During a scheduled Teams meeting, users can start a live transcription of the proceedings.

The text appears alongside the meeting video or audio in real time, including the speaker's name unless they chose to hide it and a time stamp. Once enabled, any participant can opt to see, save, and download the transcription. Learn more about using live captions in a Teams meeting. To join calls and meetings with video, you must also grant permission for apps to access your camera.

Using Teams in a virtualized environment is different from using Teams in a non-virtualized environment. For more information about the limitations of Teams in virtualized environments, check out Teams for Virtualized Desktop Infrastructure. For Teams known issues that aren't related to virtualized environments, see Support Teams in your organization. To contact Microsoft Teams support, go to the Microsoft admin center. Customizing a host pool's Remote Desktop Protocol RDP properties, such as multi-monitor experience or enabling microphone and audio redirection, lets you deliver an optimal experience for your users based on their needs.

Enabling device redirections isn't required when using Teams with media optimization. If you're using Teams without media optimization, set the following RDP properties to enable microphone and camera redirection:.

To learn more, check out Customize Remote Desktop Protocol properties for a host pool. Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support. This article describes the requirements and limitations of using Microsoft Teams in a virtualized environment. Virtual Desktop Infrastructure VDI is virtualization technology that hosts a desktop operating system and applications on a centralized server in a data center.

This enables a complete, and personalized, desktop experience for users with a fully secured and compliant centralized source. Teams in a virtualized environment supports chat and collaboration. And with the Azure Virtual Desktop, Citrix, and VMware platforms, calling and meeting functionality is also supported. Teams also supports multiple configurations in virtual environments.

These include VDI, dedicated, shared, persistent, and non-persistent modes. Features are in continuous development and are added on a regular basis, and functionality will expand over time. Using Teams in a virtualized environment might be somewhat different from using Teams in a non-virtualized environment. For example, some advanced features might not be available in a virtualized environment, and video resolution might differ. The Teams desktop app was validated with leading virtualization solution providers.

With multiple market providers, we recommend that you consult your virtualization solution provider to ensure that you meet the minimum requirements. Review the information in this section to ensure that you meet all requirements for proper functionality.

You can download the latest version of Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops at the Citrix downloads site. You'll need to sign in first. For the latest server and client requirements, see the Optimization for Microsoft Teams article on the Citrix website. VMware Horizon is a modern platform for secure delivery of virtual desktops and apps across the hybrid cloud.

To offer a great end-user experience, VMware Horizon provides media optimization for Teams. This optimization improves overall productivity across virtual desktops and apps, and enhances user experience when calling and meeting using Teams.

The required media optimization components are part of the Horizon Agent and Horizon Client by default and there's no need to install any additional plug-in to use the optimization feature for Teams.

To get the latest requirements and instructions on how to configure media optimization for Teams, see the Configuring Media Optimization for Microsoft Teams article on the VMware website. Deciding on which approach to use depends on whether you use a persistent or non-persistent setup and the associated functionality needs of your organization.

For a dedicated persistent setup, both per-machine and per-user installation will work. However, for a non-persistent setup, Teams requires a per-machine installation in order to work efficiently. Most virtual desktop optimization clients recommend per-machine installs.

Per-machine Cons: Teams updates frequently and bug fixes must be implemented often to keep up to date in the golden image. Once a user launches Teams, they are unable to prevent auto-launch. Teams will always auto-launch and cannot be turned off by the user.

Teams consumes all session resources to launch. This effectively means auto-launching is increasing your user logon times because the session will be unusable until Teams finishes launching. Per-user Pros: Teams can be prevented from auto-launching by an admin by default and a user can toggle auto-launch on or off.

This reduces login times as well as resource consumption for virtual machines. Teams stays current by automatically updating. Per-user Cons: Teams disk storage requirements multiplies by every user instead of the number of machines. Don't have time to read the entire article? Should I Leave on Optimization? Optimize Pros: Optimizing allows Teams to efficiently manage and redirect audio and video, improving performance while reducing server resource utilization.

Audio does not have to double hop between end-device, VDI, and Teams servers but instead goes directly to Teams servers. Also, audio and webcam video are not rendered in the VDI reducing resource utilization. Mapping of audio and webcam devices functions more natively without leveraging VDI vendor technologies, such as Citrix HDX audio, which can be buggy. Microsoft Teams reads the key to load in VDI mode. Loading the API is the first step toward redirection.

Exit Microsoft Teams by right-clicking the notification area icon and restarting. Microsoft Teams relies on Media Processor servers in Microsoft for meetings or multiparty calls. So the network health between the peer and the Microsoft cloud determines the performance of the call.

Please refer to Microsoft network connectivity principles for detailed guidelines around network planning. We recommend evaluating your environment to identify any risks and requirements that can influence your overall cloud voice and video deployment. For support information, see Support.

The manner in which this is accomplished will vary depending on the VPN product and machine platform used but most VPN solutions will allow some simple configuration of policy to apply this logic. For more information on VPN platform-specific split tunnel guidance, see this Microsoft article.

Citrix minimum recommendations per user are:. About performance, encoding is more expensive than decoding for CPU use at the client machine. You can hardcode the maximum encoding resolution in the Citrix Workspace app for Linux and Windows. See Encoder performance estimator and Optimization for Microsoft Teams.

If you configure an explicit proxy server in the VDA and route connections to localhost through a proxy, redirection fails. If not, optimization fails. If the branch office is configured to access the internet through a proxy, these versions support proxy servers:. If DNS requests are unsuccessful, P2P calls with outside users and conference calls media establishment fails. This support means that the endpoint must be able to perform DNS resolutions.

Consider a scenario where there is no direct path between the two peers or between a peer and a conference server and you are joining a multi-party call or meeting. The HdxRtcEngine. These ranges include both Transport Relays and media processors, front-ended by an Azure Load Balancer. Call quality depends on the underlying network protocol. Meetings fail. Use this architecture diagram as a visual reference for the call flow sequence.

The corresponding steps are indicated in the diagram. Citrix media engine and Teams. With Direct Routing, you connect your own supported session border controller to the Microsoft Phone System directly without any additional on-premises software.

Call queues, transfer, forward, hold, mute, and resume a call are supported. Starting with version , Citrix Workspace app supports dynamic emergency calling. The notification is provided based on the current location of the Citrix Workspace app that runs on the endpoint, instead of the Microsoft Teams client that runs on the VDA.

To enable dynamic emergency calling, the administrator must use the Microsoft Teams Admin Center and configure the following to create a network or emergency location map:. When users start an optimized call using the Microsoft Teams client for the first time, they might notice a warning with the Windows firewall settings.

The warning asks for users to allow communication for HdxTeams. You can apply more restrictive rules if you want. You can deploy Microsoft Teams and Skype for Business side by side as two separate solutions with overlapping capabilities.

For more information, see Understand Microsoft Teams and Skype for Business coexistence and interoperability. Examples include island modes and Skype for Business with Microsoft Teams collaboration. Also, Skype for Business with Microsoft Teams collaboration and meetings.

Peripheral access can be granted only to a single application at the time. For example, webcam access by the RealTime Media Engine during a call locks the imaging device during a call.

When the device is released, it becomes available for Microsoft Teams. Optimal audio and video quality require a network connection to the Microsoft cloud that has low latency, low jitter, and low packet loss.

Backhauling of Microsoft Teams audio-video RTP traffic from Citrix Workspace app users at branch office locations to a data center before going to the internet can add excessive latency. It might also cause congestion on WAN links. This use is to identify, categorize, and steer Microsoft Teams traffic. Business broadband internet connections in many areas suffer from intermittent packet loss, periods of excessive jitter, and outages. You can use multiple meetings or chat windows for Microsoft Teams in Windows.

This feature is supported with Citrix Workspace app for Windows Microsoft Teams supports Gallery , Large gallery , and Together mode layouts. Microsoft Teams displays a 2x2 grid with video streams of four participants known as Gallery. In this case, Microsoft Teams sends four video streams to the client device for decoding. When more than four participants share video, only the last four most active speakers appear on the screen.

Microsoft Teams also provides the large gallery view with a grid up to 7x7. As a result, the Microsoft Teams conference server composites a single video feed and sends it to the client device for decoding, resulting in lower CPU consumption. Lastly, Microsoft Teams supports Together mode , which is part of the new meeting experience.

Using AI segmentation technology to digitally place participants in a shared background, Microsoft Teams puts all participants in the same auditorium.

The user can control these modes during a conference call by selecting Gallery , Large gallery , or Together mode layouts in the ellipses menu. Microsoft Teams relies on video-based screen sharing VBSS , effectively encoding the desktop being shared with video codecs like H and creating a high-definition stream.

With HDX optimization, incoming screen sharing is treated as a video stream.
